VinFast Electric Cars in India: Vietnam’s EV Giant Enters with Bold Plans and Futuristic SUVs

VinFast Electric

VinFast, Vietnam’s fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has officially entered the Indian market, aiming to disrupt the VinFast Electric space with its cutting-edge technology and global design. The company is setting up a large-scale manufacturing plant in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, with plans to invest over $2 billion, including local production and R&D capabilities. With this move, India will become VinFast’s strategic hub for EV manufacturing and exports.

What is VinFast? A Quick Look at the Brand

VinFast is a subsidiary of Vietnam’s largest private conglomerate, Vingroup, and has rapidly gained popularity in Southeast Asia, Europe, and the U.S. for its fully electric SUVs and sedans. The company is known for its sleek design language (developed in collaboration with Pininfarina), high safety standards, and a unique battery subscription model that lowers the upfront cost for buyers.

VinFast Cars Expected in India: VF e34, VF 8 and VF 9

VinFast plans to launch a range of electric cars in India, starting with the VF e34, a compact electric SUV that rivals the Tata Nexon EV and MG ZS EV. The VF e34 offers a 150 hp electric motor, 300+ km range, ADAS features, and a premium tech-loaded cabin. Following this, the larger VF 8 and VF 9 SUVs could also enter the Indian market, offering 450–600 km range, over-the-air updates, and global safety certifications.

Battery Subscription Model and After-Sales Promise

One of VinFast’s unique offerings is the battery subscription model, where customers pay separately for the battery pack as a service. This reduces the initial cost of the EV while ensuring battery replacement if capacity drops below a threshold. VinFast also promises dedicated service centers, mobile service units, and fast-charging infrastructure partnerships to build trust among Indian buyers.

Production Plant in Chennai to Boost Local Manufacturing

VinFast is currently developing its EV factory in Thoothukudi (Chennai region) with a capacity of over 1.5 lakh units per year. The first made-in-India VinFast EVs are expected to roll out by mid-2025, aligning with India’s growing EV push and government support for green mobility.

Conclusion: With bold designs, feature-rich EVs, and aggressive localization plans, VinFast is all set to challenge the status quo in India’s electric car segment. Backed by global ambitions and local manufacturing, it may become a major player alongside Tata, Mahindra, and Hyundai in the race to dominate India’s electric future.
